Earnings · Coal India
Coal India reported its September quarter on 29 October 2026. Here is what the filing figures show, how they compare with the base and the estimate, and when to own the shares to get the Rs 10.25 dividend.
Quick answer
Coal India Q2 results FY27 show consolidated profit of Rs 6,516 crore, up 53% year on year, on revenue of Rs 44,179 crore, up 21%. The board declared a Rs 10.25 second interim dividend with record date Wednesday, 4 November 2026. Profit was about 1.9% below one reported estimate of Rs 6,639 crore.
Latest update (30 October 2026, 3:55 PM IST): Results and the Rs 10.25 dividend are out. Reports differ on profit (Rs 6,516 crore or Rs 6,547 crore), on EBITDA and on the year-ago revenue base. See the correction in the Data note.
- 28 October 2026, 8:30 PM IST: preview stage. The board meeting was notified for 29 October; one estimate put profit near Rs 6,639 crore.
Key takeaways
- Profit: Rs 6,516 crore consolidated, up 53% on the year-ago Rs 4,259 crore used in results-day reports; one report shows Rs 6,547 crore.
- Revenue: Rs 44,179 crore, up 20.9% on Rs 36,553 crore, and down 4.5% on Q1 FY27.
- Dividend: Rs 10.25 a share, record date Wednesday, 4 November 2026, payable by Friday, 27 November 2026.
- Versus estimate: Rs 6,516 crore is 1.9% below the one reported estimate of Rs 6,639 crore (my calculation).
- Correction: my 28 October preview used a Rs 30,186.7 crore revenue base; results-day reports use Rs 36,553 crore.
In plain words: Coal India mines most of India’s coal. Profit rose by half on a weak year-ago quarter, and the company is paying shareholders Rs 10.25 for each share held on the record date.
Data note: as of 30 October 2026, 3:55 PM IST. Figures are from results-day reports of Coal India’s exchange filing; I have not opened the filing itself. Correction: the 28 October preview showed Q2 FY26 revenue of Rs 30,186.7 crore and profit of Rs 4,354.24 crore; results-day reports compare with Rs 36,553 crore and Rs 4,259 crore. The reason for the change (restatement or a different line) is not confirmed. The preview’s base figures should not be used.

What did Coal India report in the Q2 results FY27?
Coal India reported Q2 FY27 consolidated profit of Rs 6,516 crore, up 53%, on revenue from operations of Rs 44,179 crore, up 20.9%, for the quarter ended 30 September 2026.
| Measure | Q2 FY27 | Q2 FY26 | Q1 FY27 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue from operations | Rs 44,179 crore | Rs 36,553 crore | Rs 46,255 crore | +20.9% YoY; −4.5% vs Q1 |
| Consolidated profit | Rs 6,516 crore | Rs 4,259 crore | about Rs 8,852 crore | +53% YoY; −26.4% vs Q1 |
| Operating profit (EBITDA) | Rs 8,499 crore | Rs 6,593 crore | not shown here | +29% YoY |
| Profit before tax | Rs 8,728 crore | about Rs 5,990 crore (my calculation) | +46% as reported | |
| Half-year profit (H1) | Rs 15,368 crore | Rs 13,056 crore | +17.7% (my calculation) |

The year-on-year jump is large because the year-ago quarter was weak. Heavy rain cut output and dispatch in September 2025. A smaller fall from Q1 this year (revenue −4.5%) fits a quarter with fewer disruptions, though the profit fall of 26.4% from Q1 is still sharp. As usual for a seasonal business, the year-on-year comparison is the fair one.
Why do Coal India Q2 FY27 profit and EBITDA figures differ across reports?
Different reports use different lines: profit appears as Rs 6,516 crore (+53%) and Rs 6,547 crore (+57%), and EBITDA as Rs 8,499 crore and Rs 11,447 crore, so always name the line when you compare.
| Line | Figure(s) reported | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Q2 FY27 consolidated profit | Rs 6,516 crore (+53%) and Rs 6,547 crore (+57%) | Rs 31 crore apart; possibly owners’ share versus profit for the period (not confirmed) | Check the filing; quote one line consistently |
| Q2 FY26 profit base | Rs 4,259 crore, Rs 4,262.64 crore and Rs 4,354.24 crore | Rs 6,516 crore is +53.0% on Rs 4,259 crore but +49.6% on Rs 4,354.24 crore (my calculation) | The +53% headline implies the lower base |
| EBITDA | Rs 8,499 crore (19.2% of revenue) and Rs 11,447 crore (25.9%) | Coal India does not print EBITDA; sources build it differently | Compare only within one source |
| Q2 FY26 revenue | Rs 36,553 crore (results-day) vs Rs 30,186.7 crore (earlier reports) | Base changed since the preview | Use Rs 36,553 crore until the filing says otherwise |
| Q2 FY27 profit growth | +53% and +57% | Same quarter, two bases | I could not reconcile +57% with any base seen |

The margins above are my own division of EBITDA by Rs 44,179 crore. They show how far the two EBITDA lines sit apart. One news site reports that margin expanded to 26% from 24%, which matches the larger EBITDA; another says operating profit is Rs 8,499 crore. Neither is wrong; they measure different things. When a headline says “margin”, ask which EBITDA it uses.
Did Coal India beat estimates in Q2 FY27?
No, on the one estimate on record: profit of Rs 6,516 crore is 1.9% below Rs 6,639 crore, and Rs 6,547 crore would be 1.4% below (my calculations); one outlet also says EBITDA and margin missed.
| Item | Estimate | Reported | Gap (my calculation) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consolidated profit | Rs 6,639 crore (one report) | Rs 6,516 crore | −1.9% |
| Consolidated profit, other line | Rs 6,639 crore | Rs 6,547 crore | −1.4% |
| H1 FY27 profit (preview scenario) | Rs 15,489 crore | Rs 15,368 crore | −0.8% |
| Dividend | Not estimated | Rs 10.25 | Matches last year’s Q2 amount |

A miss of under 2 percent is small. The estimate was one source, not a consensus, and it excluded a Rs 871 crore stripping activity adjustment. I have not confirmed whether the reported profit includes that adjustment; check note disclosures in the filing. The same estimate looked like a 52.5% rise on the old base; the reported rise is 53% on a lower base, which is why the percentages look close while the rupee numbers differ.
How does Q2 FY27 compare with Q1 FY27 and with the half year?
Revenue fell 4.5% and profit fell 26.4% from Q1 FY27, but half-year profit of Rs 15,368 crore is 17.7% above H1 FY26, so the year is ahead despite the Q2 dip.
Q1 FY27 revenue was Rs 46,255 crore and profit about Rs 8,852 crore. Q2 revenue of Rs 44,179 crore is 4.5% lower, and profit of Rs 6,516 crore is 26.4% lower (reported by two outlets, consistent with my arithmetic). Profit fell much more than revenue, which points to margin pressure from Q1 rather than a volume collapse.
| Half-year view | Amount | Source and basis |
|---|---|---|
| H1 FY26 profit | Rs 13,056 crore | As shown in results-day reports; earlier reports showed Rs 13,097.66 crore |
| Q1 FY27 profit | about Rs 8,852 crore | Reported as Rs 8,849.81 crore and Rs 8,852.11 crore |
| Q2 FY27 profit | Rs 6,516 crore | Results-day reports |
| H1 FY27 profit | Rs 15,368 crore | Reported; Q1 plus Q2 gives Rs 15,368 crore |
| H1 growth | +17.7% | 15,368 / 13,056 (my calculation) |

Operating data reported before the results pointed the same way. September 2026 production was 53.5 million tonnes (+9.2%) and offtake 61.2 million tonnes (+12.5%), though April to September production was still 2.5% lower at 321 million tonnes. Offtake of 384.2 million tonnes for the half year (+7.6%) ran ahead of output, meaning pit-head stocks fell. Capex in H1 FY27 was Rs 7,966 crore, up 27%, per a company release on 27 October 2026.
What dividend did Coal India declare, and what is the record date?

What is the Rs 10.25 Coal India dividend worth in rupees?
1,000 shares receive Rs 10,250, which is about 2.6% of the Rs 392 close shown on Screener for 28 October 2026; the whole payout is about Rs 6,317 crore (my calculations).
Coal India’s paid-up equity capital is Rs 6,163 crore at a face value of Rs 10, about 616.3 crore shares. Multiply by Rs 10.25 for the cash cost. The price used is from an aggregator and moves daily, so the yield is a worked example, not a quote.
| Shares held | Dividend at Rs 10.25 | TDS if applicable (10%) | Net before tax at slab |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | Rs 5,125 | none (below Rs 10,000) | Rs 5,125 |
| 1,000 | Rs 10,250 | Rs 1,025 | Rs 9,225 |
| 2,000 | Rs 20,500 | Rs 2,050 | Rs 18,450 |
| Whole payout (about 616.3 crore shares) | about Rs 6,317 crore |

TDS under Section 194 is generally 10% for residents when dividends from one company exceed Rs 10,000 in a financial year. Confirm the current rule; the capital gains and dividend tax guide covers it. Dividends are also taxable at your slab rate, so TDS is not the final tax. NRI readers should see NRI investment in the Indian stock market, since withholding for non-residents is generally higher and may fall under a treaty.
What should you verify in the Coal India filing before quoting these numbers?
Check the profit line, the Q2 FY26 comparatives, the EBITDA definition and the stripping adjustment, because results-day reports disagree on each.
| What to read | Reported mark | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Profit attributable to owners | Rs 6,516 crore or Rs 6,547 crore | Which line is each report quoting? |
| Q2 FY26 comparatives | Rs 4,259 crore profit; Rs 36,553 crore revenue | Were last year’s figures restated? |
| Stripping activity adjustment | Rs 871 crore (excluded from one estimate) | Is it inside reported profit? |
| Exceptional items and tax | Profit before tax Rs 8,728 crore | What explains the gap to net profit? |
| Dividend notice | Rs 10.25; 4 Nov 2026; by 27 Nov 2026 | Do the filing and exchange notice match? |

How did the 28 October preview compare with the actual results?
The preview got the date and the dividend watch right, but its Q2 FY26 revenue and profit bases do not match results-day reports, so those figures are corrected on this page.
| Preview item (28 October 2026) | Preview said | Results-day reports show | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Board meeting date | 29 October 2026 | 29 October 2026 | Confirmed |
| Dividend | Possible second interim; amount unconfirmed | Rs 10.25, record date 4 November 2026 | Confirmed |
| Estimate for Q2 profit | About Rs 6,639 crore (one report) | Rs 6,516 crore; Rs 6,547 crore on another line | Below estimate |
| Q2 FY26 revenue base | Rs 30,186.7 crore | Rs 36,553 crore | Corrected |
| Q2 FY26 profit base | Rs 4,354.24 crore | Rs 4,259 crore used for the +53% headline | Corrected; conflict remains |
| H1 FY27 profit scenario at the estimate | Rs 15,489 crore | Rs 15,368 crore | 0.8% below |
Cite this table: PositionalCalls, “Coal India Preview Versus Actual Table, as of 30 October 2026”.
I flag this openly because a wrong base can mislead a reader into thinking growth was higher or lower than it was. The corrected comparison is the one in the results table at the top of this page. If the filing shows restated comparatives, the explanation will be added here with the date.
What should you watch next after the Coal India Q2 results FY27?
Watch the 4 November record date, then the e-auction premium, offtake against output, and margin recovery in the December quarter.
- 4 November 2026: record date. Check the exchange for the ex-date marker.
- Margin: the Q2 profit fall from Q1 was steeper than the revenue fall; a recovery would show in cost per tonne.
- E-auction premium: reports on the Q1 premium differ (35% in one broker note, 47% in another), so wait for a filed figure.
- Offtake versus production: stocks fell in H1; this cannot continue indefinitely.
- Peer filings: the energy cluster reports around the same dates; see the table below.
| Company | Our page | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Reliance | Reliance Q2 results FY27 | Board meeting reported for Friday, 30 October 2026 |
| Asian Paints | Asian Paints Q2 results FY27 | Different cluster; same results window |

The full list of dates sits on the Q2 results calendar hub, and the previous quarter is analysed in the Coal India Q3 results FY26 analysis.
What do you need to know about tax, costs and safety?
Dividends are taxed in your hands at slab rate, TDS may apply above a yearly threshold, and you should never pay anyone for “dividend alerts”.
- What you need: shares in your demat account by 3 November 2026.
- Costs: check your broker’s current charge schedule; the dividend itself carries no brokerage.
- Tax: see the rupee table above and the linked tax guide; confirm current rules or ask a tax adviser.
- Scam warning: fake results alerts, paid “dividend capture” tips and KYC links on messaging apps are common. Never share an OTP.
What do most people miss about the Coal India Q2 results FY27?
Most miss that profit rose mainly on a weak base, that two profit lines and two EBITDA lines are in circulation, and that a dividend does not predict the share price.
- Open the filing for both profit lines before quoting growth.
- Compare Q2 FY27 with Q2 FY26, never with Q1 FY27.
- Note record date, ex-date and payment date together.
- Check whether the stripping adjustment of Rs 871 crore sits inside profit.
- Buy by 3 November 2026 if you want the dividend.
Analyst’s note
- What stands out: in the Coal India Q2 results FY27, profit rose 53% but fell 26.4% from Q1, so the story is a low base, not a new peak.
- Easy to miss: my own preview used a revenue base that reports no longer match. A restated or different base can change every percentage.
- What would change the view: a December-quarter margin below the Q2 level would signal cost pressure.
- Caution: this is reasoning from reported numbers, not a forecast, and no outcome is assured.
- Reader action: check the dividend dates and the filing before acting.
Bottom line
Coal India Q2 results FY27: profit Rs 6,516 crore (+53%), revenue Rs 44,179 crore (+20.9%), Rs 10.25 dividend, record date 4 November 2026. Profit was 1.9% below the one estimate on record. Confirm each figure against the filing, because reports differ on profit, EBITDA and the year-ago base.

Frequently asked questions
What are the Coal India Q2 results FY27?
Coal India reported consolidated profit of Rs 6,516 crore, up 53%, on revenue of Rs 44,179 crore, up 20.9%, for the quarter ended 30 September 2026. One report shows Rs 6,547 crore; check the filing for the exact line.
How much dividend did Coal India declare with the Q2 results FY27?
The board declared a second interim dividend of Rs 10.25 per share on a Rs 10 face value on 29 October 2026. That equals the Rs 10.25 declared with last year’s Q2 results.
What is the Coal India dividend record date?
The record date is Wednesday, 4 November 2026, and payment is due on or before Friday, 27 November 2026. Under T+1 you must own the shares by the close of Tuesday, 3 November 2026.
Did Coal India beat Q2 profit estimates?
Against one reported estimate of Rs 6,639 crore, profit of Rs 6,516 crore was 1.9% lower (my calculation). That estimate was a single report, not a consensus, so treat the gap as indicative only.
Why do Coal India Q2 FY27 profit figures differ?
Reports quote Rs 6,516 crore and Rs 6,547 crore, and year-ago bases of Rs 4,259 crore, Rs 4,262.64 crore and Rs 4,354.24 crore. These are likely different profit lines. The filing is the final source.
What was Coal India EBITDA in Q2 FY27?
Reports show Rs 8,499 crore (up 29%) and Rs 11,447 crore (up 28%) because Coal India does not print EBITDA and sources build it differently. Compare figures only within one source.
At Rs 10.25 a share, 1,000 shares receive Rs 10,250 before tax. TDS of 10% may apply above Rs 10,000 per year per company for residents, so check current rules or ask a tax adviser.
Why did Coal India profit fall from Q1 to Q2?
Profit fell 26.4% from Rs 8,852 crore to Rs 6,516 crore while revenue fell 4.5%. The monsoon makes Q2 seasonally weaker, and margin also eased. Year-on-year comparison is the fairer test.
Is the Coal India dividend taxable?
Yes. Dividends are taxed at your slab rate, and TDS may apply above a yearly threshold. Non-residents generally face higher withholding that may be reduced under a treaty. Check current rules.
Where do I check the official Coal India results?
Open Coal India’s announcements on BSE or NSE or its investor page at coalindia.in. News summaries differ on profit and EBITDA definitions, so use the filing as the final source.
